The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has issued a stern warning to individuals within his party who he says are scapegoating him for the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections.
In a spirited interview on Kessben TV — now circulating widely on social media — Kodua declared his intention to “deal with” those behind what he describes as deliberate blame games designed to tarnish his reputation.
“I have targeted some people who will accuse me, saying, ‘General Secretary, you were among the people that caused our defeat,’ and they will see what will happen,” Kodua stated, his tone firm and unwavering.
Kodua Frimpong accused unnamed party members of resorting to public finger-pointing instead of owning up to collective strategic lapses. “Election is not an event; it is a process,” he explained. “December 7 didn’t just come about. Nine major political activities in 2023 shaped the outcome.”
One of the miscalculations he cited was the party’s delayed nomination of a presidential candidate. According to Kodua, the NPP allowed the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to dominate the campaign narrative for several months.
“NDC named its candidate in 2023. We waited until November. It means we gave them free space. That’s a strategic failure — and those are the facts we should be confronting, not looking for scapegoats,” he emphasised.
The aftermath of the 2024 election has left the NPP reeling, with John Dramani Mahama of the NDC declared president-elect after securing over 6.3 million votes. The NPP’s candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, polled approximately 4.6 million votes. Mahama’s party not only reclaimed the presidency but also won a clear majority in Parliament.
Kodua’s comments appear to signal a brewing internal storm as the NPP begins soul-searching in the wake of its electoral defeat. His strong stance suggests that the party’s post-election reckoning will not be without confrontation.
For now, the General Secretary has made one thing clear — he will not sit back quietly while others lay the blame for the party’s downfall at his door.
