Kwame Awuah Darko, a leading light within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a clarion call to Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 general elections. His message? No free passes. If the NDC takes power, the people must demand accountability from day one, without offering a honeymoon period.
Speaking on Nhyira FM, Awuah Darko minced no words: “From the very first day, the NDC government must be held accountable. Ghanaians must demand swift action to address our challenges. There’s no room for complacency.”
Awuah Darko painted a picture of a rejuvenated John Dramani Mahama, ready to lead with experience and a fresh outlook. “John Mahama has reflected on his past, learned valuable lessons, and is ready to deliver impactful governance,” he said, projecting Mahama as the man to guide Ghana toward a brighter future.
Aiming at the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awuah Darko criticized the government’s focus on temporary solutions like NABCO instead of long-term strategies in agriculture.
“The neglect of agriculture, particularly rice farming, has cost Ghana. Investing in this sector would reduce reliance on imports and create sustainable jobs for our youth,” he said, leveraging his expertise as a commercial rice farmer to underscore his argument.
On energy, Awuah Darko bemoaned the disrepair of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), blaming it on poor management and a lack of visionary leadership.
“Ghana has untapped potential in the energy sector, but mismanagement has held us back. A strategic plan is desperately needed,” he stressed, pointing to the untapped wealth in Ghana’s natural resources.
Wrapping up, Awuah Darko issued a rallying cry for active public engagement. He emphasized that Ghanaians must keep their leaders in check to ensure the nation’s progress.
“Active citizenship is the key to sustainable development. Leaders must be accountable every step of the way,” he concluded.
With the elections looming, Awuah Darko’s remarks highlight the urgency for change and set the tone for what promises to be a decisive and transformative political battle.
