The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reportedly in turmoil as a powerful party figure, Rita Talata Asobayire, is being accused of orchestrating a deep-seated division between former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his former right-hand man, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Inside sources whisper that Asobayire allegedly poisoned Akufo-Addo’s mind against Bawumia, feeding him claims that the NPP flagbearer had shifted his loyalty to former President John Agyekum Kufuor. According to the rumors, she convinced Akufo-Addo that Bawumia had been publicly crediting Kufuor—not him—for his rise in politics.
Sources further allege that Asobayire warned Akufo-Addo that Bawumia was determined to align himself with the Kufuor faction within the party if he won the presidency. Another insider claims she informed the former president that Bawumia’s campaign had deliberately sidelined him, fearing that his involvement would tarnish their chances in the 2024 elections.
This alleged betrayal reportedly infuriated Akufo-Addo, leading him to withdraw financial and logistical support from Bawumia’s campaign. Unlike past elections where the ruling party’s candidate played a front-and-center role in government projects and campaign-related events, Bawumia was kept on the sidelines—an unusual move attributed to Akufo-Addo’s growing discontent, allegedly fueled by Asobayire.
Political analysts observe that Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to fully endorse or facilitate Bawumia’s campaign efforts raises serious concerns about internal sabotage within the NPP. Many believe Asobayire’s influence may have cost Bawumia key strategic advantages in the run-up to the elections.
Despite multiple attempts, Madam Rita Asobayire has remained silent on these damning allegations.
As the NPP struggles to maintain unity ahead of the 2024 elections, the question remains: Has Rita Asobayire single-handedly derailed Bawumia’s chances, or is this yet another sign of a fractured and divided ruling party?
