Dr Dominic Ayine, Attorney General, has dismissed claims that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has a stake in Hubtel, a prominent Ghanaian e-commerce platform. His remarks come against the backdrop of persistent allegations by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members prior to the 2024 elections, who claimed that Bawumia was secretly linked to Hubtel, which they alleged was collecting revenue for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Speaking at a corporate event celebrating Hubtel’s 24th anniversary, Ayine underscored the need to insulate businesses from partisan politics, advocating for a focus on economic contribution rather than political affiliation.
“I’m a bit tongue-tied because this came as a surprise,” Ayine said, addressing the gathering. “But all that has been said this evening is the story of a great company, homegrown on Ghanaian soil by young people who had dreams but also relied on God. And I think that is very important. They have faith in the Lord, and the Lord has led them to where they are today.”
Ayine emphasised the importance of fostering an environment where businesses can thrive regardless of the party in power, arguing that success stories like Hubtel should be celebrated for their impact on the national economy rather than their perceived political connections.
“There are no NDC businesses, and there are no NPP businesses. There are Ghanaian businesses, and that is very important,” he stated. “Just as Microsoft and the tech giants in the United States have grown and contributed to the American economy, you are also going to grow in leaps and bounds. And it will not matter if the NDC is in power or the NPP is in power. What will matter is that the company is contributing to e-commerce in Ghana and to the growth of our economy.”
Highlighting the role of Stanford University, Ayine noted that the institution had played a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of Hubtel, drawing a parallel with Silicon Valley’s influence on global tech giants.
He concluded by raising a toast to Hubtel’s continued success, commending its two-decade-long commitment to connecting businesses with communities across Ghana: “To all of you, ladies and gentlemen, raise your glasses to the success of a Ghanaian business. Cheers to Hubtel, 24 years of connecting business with the community!”
