Covid-19-Further-Guidelines-from-Ghana-Catholic-Bishops-Conference

In a passionate bid to protect Ghana’s precious ecosystems, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious – Ghana (CMSR-GH), is set to host an Environmental Prayer Walk Against Galamsey on Friday, October 11, 2024. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. from the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka, making its way through the city’s principal streets before concluding with a Holy Mass at Christ the King Grotto in Cantonment.

This initiative is more than just a walk; it embodies the Church’s civil, communal, and religious commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s environment, which is currently under threat from the illegal mining activities known as galamsey. Participants will pray the Rosary, a symbolic weapon against the adversities facing the nation’s natural resources.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to all priests, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, C.S.Sp., Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has urged clergy to announce the Prayer Walk during Sunday services on October 6, 2024. He emphasized that each parish should mobilize its members, providing transportation and supporting the event with essential supplies, including bottles of water.

“The faithful are expected to turn out in droves to demonstrate their commitment to our country and its environment. We will not only pray for intervention but also present a petition to the President at the Jubilee House,” he stated.

The event promises to be a significant display of unity and resolve among Ghanaians who are concerned about the devastating impacts of galamsey, which has led to environmental degradation, pollution, and loss of biodiversity. The Archbishop has called on all Knights of St. John International, Ladies Auxiliary, Knights, and Ladies of Marshall to join in solidarity, wearing their distinctive attire as a show of commitment.
As participants gather for this vital cause, they will seek the intercession of the Blessed Lady, praying for the preservation of Ghana’s rich natural heritage and advocating for responsible stewardship of the environment.

With this initiative, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra hopes to inspire collective action among citizens, reinforcing the message that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that transcends religious boundaries.
