Dr George Sipa-Adja Yankey, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) and a former Minister for Health, has extended a goodwill message to students preparing for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), urging them to adopt discipline, focus, and hard work as they approach this critical academic milestone.

In a statement issued by his office and shared with the press in Esiama, Ellembelle District, Dr Yankey described the BECE as a defining stage in the educational trajectory of young Ghanaians, emphasising its role as a gateway to further academic and personal development.

He reminded candidates that the examination marked their first formal certification, and as such, should be approached with the seriousness and determination it deserves. “This examination is not merely an academic requirement,” the statement read, “but a springboard for self-actualisation and a foundation upon which to build a meaningful future.”

Over 500,000 final-year Junior High School pupils are expected to sit the 2025 BECE from Tuesday, June 11. The examination is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and is required for placement into Senior High Schools across Ghana.

Addressing the broader social context in which students prepare, Dr Yankey encouraged candidates to make prudent use of digital tools to enhance their studies, while warning against the misuse of social media and other distractions. He advised them to stay focused, make effective use of time, and draw on the support of teachers and family as they prepare for the week-long examination.

“Education remains the surest pathway to progress,” he said. “As a nation, we look to the younger generation to carry the torch forward. Their diligence today lays the foundation for the society we wish to build tomorrow.”

Dr Yankey, himself an indigene of Esiama, also urged the students to conduct themselves with integrity throughout the examination period. He concluded his message with words of encouragement, expressing confidence in the students’ ability to rise to the challenge and make their communities proud.
