The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is drawing a firm line against illegal mining, with senior party figure Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie making it clear that galamsey has no place in President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Mr. Quashie, who serves as the Chair of the NDC Council of Elders in South Africa, revealed in an interview with Class 91.3FM on Friday, 7th February 2025, that tackling the galamsey menace is a top priority for President Mahama. He stressed that the administration is committed to restoring Ghana’s degraded environment and safeguarding its water bodies from destruction.

“We’ve directed law enforcement agencies to gradually rid our forests and rivers of illegal miners. The process started as soon as we won the elections,” Mr. Quashie affirmed.
He noted that the Mahama-led government is focused on a long-term solution, ensuring that miners are redirected into sustainable, regulated mining practices rather than being allowed to destroy the country’s natural resources.

The NDC stalwart also took a swipe at the previous Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of failing to curb illegal mining despite numerous promises. “The NPP used the fight against galamsey as a political gimmick. Under their watch, our rivers turned brown, and forest reserves were plundered. But under President Mahama, there will be no room for such recklessness.”

He called on Ghanaians to support the government’s efforts to enforce responsible mining practices, adding that the well-being of future generations depends on decisive action today.
With Mahama at the helm, the message is loud and clear—galamsey is on its way out!
