• I Won’t Buy My Way To Power
Pressure is mounting within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for veteran politician and former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to take over as National Chairman ahead of the 2028 elections. Party insiders say his experience and influence are needed to restore discipline and reconnect the party to its base after a disastrous 2024 electoral defeat.
But there’s a twist—he won’t hit the campaign trail for it!
Speaking to Kumasi-based Abusua FM, the ex-MP for Suame made it clear that he would only accept the chairmanship if the party chooses him through consensus, not a nationwide contest.
“The way we elect party leaders is flawed. The constitution says leaders should be ‘chosen,’ not necessarily elected. If we build consensus, I’m in. But if I have to spend my money traveling across the country to campaign, count me out!” he warned.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu didn’t hold back on his criticism of the current election process, blaming it for corruption in the party and beyond.
“This is where corruption starts. A party treasurer, for example, spends huge sums to campaign. When they get into office, they’ll naturally look to recover their money. How do you expect them to manage party funds honestly?” he questioned.
The veteran politician insists that if the NPP truly wants change, it must rethink how it selects party leaders.
So, will he take up the challenge?
“If the party selects me by consensus, I will accept. But if I have to fight through an election, spending my resources, I won’t do it. The party must change this dangerous trend,” he stated.
His stance has triggered heated debate within the NPP, with many now questioning whether a consensus-based system should be adopted ahead of the 2028 elections. Will the party listen, or will Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu sit this one out?
