National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Mahama has fired shots at Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s promise of youth job creation, calling it “hollow” given the government’s track record of unpaid allowances for young trainees. Speaking to a crowd in Kwamikrom as part of his Resetting Ghana Campaign, Mahama pointed to the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees, many of whom remain unpaid long after completing their duties.
“Dr. Bawumia keeps talking about creating jobs for the youth,” Mahama said. “But what about the NABCO trainees who have been waiting months to be paid? Start by paying them first before you make new promises,” he urged.
Mahama, who momentarily paused his tour to attend a National Peace Campaign event, also noted Bawumia’s absence from the peace launch, calling it a missed opportunity to show real commitment to Ghana’s unity. “While I joined the peace campaign, Bawumia was out making more promises. If he cared about the youth, he’d honour the commitments his government made to them instead of pretending to start fresh,” he remarked.
Mahama didn’t hold back on economic criticisms, either, saying the NPP’s economic promises have been a “trial turned curse.” He highlighted the soaring costs of basic items under the current administration, pointing out that kenkey has shot up from GHS 1 to GHS 5, while cement prices have quadrupled and the cedi has taken a dive from 4 to 17 against the dollar.
“Back in 2016, they asked us to give them a try. Eight years later, the results speak for themselves. If I were them, I’d be too embarrassed to even ask for another chance after the hardship they’ve left behind,” he concluded, rallying the crowd to vote for accountability come election time.
With his Resetting Ghana tour, Mahama is campaigning for a change from what he calls a “broken system” — urging Ghanaians to reject the ruling party’s “broken promises” and aim for a better path forward.
