Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Former Majority Leader and MP for Suame

As the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up to reposition itself for the 2028 elections, former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, is advocating significant amendments to the party’s constitution.

The seasoned lawmaker, widely regarded for his influential role in shaping Ghana’s legislative landscape, is proposing changes to several of the 185 clauses in the NPP’s constitution. He contends that these amendments are critical to reinforcing the party’s structure and preparing it for a robust campaign ahead of the next general elections.

The NPP leadership, following a National Executive Committee meeting last month, resolved to invite proposals from members for potential constitutional amendments. In response, Kyei Mensah Bonsu has reviewed the party’s legal framework and outlined a comprehensive set of recommendations, which he is expected to present to the Constitution Review Committee.

Among the proposed reforms, the former legislator highlights the need for clearer delineation of roles and responsibilities for party officers, a reconfiguration of constituency executive committees, and more stringent guidelines for the selection and supervision of parliamentary candidates.

One notable suggestion is the introduction of a new sub-clause 2, empowering the National Council to assist the National Annual Delegates Conference in shaping general party policy and providing strategic direction on critical national matters.

Kyei Mensah Bonsu is also pushing for greater party involvement in the selection of government appointees, recommending the establishment of a committee chaired by the National Chairman. This committee, comprising senior party figures and regional representatives, would advise the President on ministerial, deputy ministerial, ambassadorial, and other key appointments made under the 1992 Constitution.

“This is about ensuring that the NPP remains united and formidable in the face of emerging political dynamics,” Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and strategic alignment as the party plots its course towards 2028.

The proposed amendments, which the party leadership is expected to deliberate on in the coming months, are intended to foster internal cohesion, streamline operations, and position the NPP as a stronger electoral force.
