Dr Bawumia’s campaign has taken another embarrassing tumble — and this time, it’s their maths that’s being mocked.
Mpraeso MP, Davis Opoku Ansah, known across Ghana’s political grapevine as OPK, took a sharp jab at the Vice President’s team over their shaky claim that 220 former MMDCEs had thrown their weight behind Bawumia’s re-election bid.
But after reports emerged that only 10 endorsed him publicly, OPK couldn’t resist pulling out his political calculator — and the sarcasm.
“MMDCE scam: If 220 attended and 10 endorsed, find x — the number of MPs who endorsed last week,” OPK posted cheekily on Facebook, setting political social media alight.
The post, written like a high school maths riddle, comes just days after Team Bawumia trumpeted the 220 figure as proof of “unshakable grassroots support.”
But the numbers — and the photos — tell a different story. Cameras at the event captured rows of half-empty chairs, disengaged attendees, and a handful of ex-MMDCEs mumbling vague pleasantries about “loyalty” and “gratitude.”
Insiders say many of the supposed “endorsees” were only there for the fried rice and mineral water, not to pledge allegiance to any campaign.
“It was a glorified boys-boys reunion,” one former appointee told The Hawk. “Most of us just came to see who’s still around. Endorse? That’s stretching it.”
OPK’s roast has since gone viral, with Ghanaians riffing off the “find x” formula. One user wrote: “If 10 endorsed and 210 ate jollof, what’s the probability of Bawumia winning a real contest?”
Critics say the Bawumia campaign has developed a worrying habit of padding endorsements, turning every gathering into a PR stunt, but lacking the substance to match the hype.
“They count invitations as endorsements,” another MP quipped anonymously. “Next, they’ll count drivers and caterers too.”
As the NPP gears up for what could be its most unpredictable internal contest yet, Team Bawumia may have to start doing better sums — and answering tougher questions.
