Minister for Communications and Digitalisation and MP for Ablekuma West, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, showcased a display of humility and dedication to party unity as she addressed speculations regarding her potential candidacy as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 General Elections.

Despite affirming her suitability and capability to serve as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Mrs. Ursula Owusu emphasized the importance of allowing Dr. Bawumia the space and autonomy to select his vice-presidential candidate of choice. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful articulated her stance, stating, “Oh! Ursula will enhance anybody’s opportunities anywhere. If I am with you, by the grace of God, progress will be made… But I will say that we must allow him [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] to choose as and when he deems fit.”

Addressing the issue of ethnicity, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, who identifies as a typical Akan, acknowledged that her background could be considered advantageous if Dr. Bawumia were seeking an Akan partner. However, she underscored that the paramount factor should be the ability of the running mate to contribute to the success of the ticket. “What is happening distresses me,” she remarked, urging for trust in Dr. Bawumia’s judgment and selection process. “So let’s let him do due diligence and select the one with whom he can work and victory will be ours,” she added.

Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s remarks come amid widespread speculation regarding her potential candidacy as the vice-presidential nominee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections. While she has been tipped by many as a likely candidate, her recent statement reflects a commitment to party unity and Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in shaping the party’s electoral strategy.

The Minister’s deference to Dr. Bawumia’s decision underscores the importance of internal cohesion and solidarity within the NPP as they prepare for the highly anticipated 2024 General Elections. By prioritizing unity and trust in leadership, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s statement echoes a sentiment of collective purpose and determination to secure victory in the upcoming electoral contest.

As the political landscape continues to evolve in Ghana, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s stance serves as a testament to the principles of democratic governance and the importance of inclusive decision-making processes within political parties. With the 2024 elections on the horizon, the NPP’s commitment to internal cohesion and unity will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the electoral contest.
