In a show of solidarity for electoral integrity, the coalition of Positive Transparency and Accountability-Ghana (PTAAM-GH), Alliance for Social Equality and Public Accountability (ASEPA), and AriseGhana has joined forces with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a nationwide demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC). The groups are demanding a forensic audit of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register, amidst rising allegations of irregular voter transfers.
The organizations, known for their advocacy in transparency and social justice, are voicing strong concerns over the EC’s refusal to subject the provisional voter register to a thorough forensic examination. This refusal has sparked accusations that the voter registration process might be compromised, with reports of unauthorized transfers and manipulations surfacing across the country.
In a joint statement, the coalition underscored the critical need for a transparent electoral process. They argue that the EC’s reluctance to audit the voter register undermines public confidence and jeopardizes the fairness of the upcoming December 7 elections. “The foundation of Ghana’s democracy is transparency, accountability, and fairness,” the statement reads. “By refusing to audit the voters register, the EC is undermining these principles and putting the legitimacy of the elections at risk.”
The coalition’s call for action includes an urgent demand for a comprehensive forensic audit of the Provisional Voters Register. They insist that the audit must be conducted independently to ensure impartiality and that the results be made public to maintain transparency. The groups also stress that the oversight of this audit should be managed by a body free from political influence to uphold the audit’s credibility.
As part of their campaign, the coalition is inviting all concerned Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and political stakeholders to join the peaceful protests. The aim is to rally public support and reinforce the demand for a fair and transparent electoral process that truly reflects the will of the people.
