Former Editor in Chief of The Enquirer newspaper has revealed that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is secretly repackaging the corruption-fraught Agyapa Royalty deal with the intent to reintroduce it for Parliamentary passage.
Mr. Archer describes the move as hypocritical.
In a tweet, Mr. Archer points out that the NPP has decided to swim against the tide of public opinion in its adamance to reintroduce the flagged deal in Parliament. According to him, the NPP would have shouted from the rooftops if the then-governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) had done the same thing
“Did you hear that Agyapa is going to be repackaged and brought back to the Parliament? If it were to be @JDMahama they would have brought out loudspeakers and be playing “yentie obiara””
The Akufo-Addo government has decided to return the Agyapa deal to Parliament in spite of its unpopularity.
President Akufo-Addo, while presenting the 2021 State of the Nation Address (SONA), announced that he would be reintroducing the deal to Parliament so that it may be passed.
The NDC MPs in Parliament have vowed to resist the deal which seeks to put the mineral royalty receipts of the country into the control of the President’s family members and some friends.
However, recent disappointment from the NDC MPs has led to concerns that they cannot be trusted to be a check on the NPP’s excesses.
After they failed to block several problematic Ministers that the President had nominated, the NDC MPs turned round to blame COVID-19 for their absence during plenary voting, something that many have said is a convenient excuse.
