Photo: Destooled Nana Kusi Baaye II

A greedy Ashanti chief who flouted sacred tradition, grabbed cash, and plundered lands has been brutally dethroned by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Nana Kusi Baaye II, the now-axed chief of Ohwim, was dragged before the Kumasi Traditional Council on Monday, February 24, exposed for extortion, illegal land sales, and even illegal mining—all while mocking the Great Oath of the Ashanti Kingdom!

SHOCKING BETRAYAL
The once-powerful chief—who ruled for 16 years—was found guilty of selling out both his people and his principles. It was revealed that despite knowing the true landowners in a chieftaincy dispute, he took a fat ¢6,000 bribe to testify in their favour—only to flip sides for more cash from the opposing party!
But that was just the start of his long list of sins.

His own sister, Akosua Nyame, dropped the bombshell that Nana Kusi Baaye II mocked the sacred Great Oath, dismissing it completely when she invoked it to stop him from illegally selling off cemetery land meant for royals. His shocking response?
“If the Great Oath has legs, let it come and arrest me.”

But the Great Oath didn’t have to—the Asantehene did!

LAND SCAM & ILLEGAL MINING EXPOSED
A former chief also exposed Nana Kusi Baaye II’s dirty dealings, revealing how he lied to his people, claiming Asantehene had taken land for a solar project—when in reality, he had hijacked it for illegal mining!

The council also heard disturbing revelations about his cruelty, including his role in blocking the burial of Asikasuhene, who had been stuck in a mortuary for five years. The disgraced chief even burned the late chief’s belongings, worsening the pain for grieving families.
He was also linked to the wrongful arrests of community leaders, six of whom have tragically died.

ASANTEHENE LAYS DOWN THE LAW
After exposing his long trail of lies, greed, and abuse of power, the Asantehene delivered swift justice, ordering the traditional rites to strip him of his title and all authority.
Furious, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II warned: “This is not only about him—any chief who dares to violate the Great Oath will suffer the same fate.”
And with that, Nana Kusi Baaye II walked in a chief… but left as nobody.
