COP N.K. Boakye retired (L) Benard Antwi Bosiako (Wontumi) R

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the influential Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has launched a scathing attack on retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye, also dubbed Commander One. Wontumi’s ire comes as Boakye makes a high-profile return to the political arena, allegedly aligning with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and intensifying the pre-election climate.

Wontumi, renowned for his combative political tactics, has accused Boakye of covertly supporting the NDC by training operatives to instigate unrest in the lead-up to the crucial 2024 elections. In a forceful broadcast on his Wontumi Radio station, Wontumi demanded that Boakye be placed under a citizen’s arrest, claiming that the retired police chief is orchestrating a scheme to undermine his influence in the Ashanti Region.

The catalyst for Wontumi’s fury appears to be Boakye’s intervention in thwarting alleged attempts by thugs connected to Wontumi to disrupt the NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration in Kumasi. This protest, calling for a forensic audit of the voter register, has become a flashpoint in the political landscape, with Boakye playing a pivotal role in ensuring its success.

“If there’s any disorder, Kofi Boakye will be held accountable! You sought the IGP position under an NPP government, and now you’re aiding NDC operatives to create chaos. I am stronger than you, Kofi Boakye and I will hold you to account!” Wontumi asserted during a heated radio interview.

The animosity between Wontumi and Boakye is not new; it stems from an earlier incident when Boakye, still in active service, arrested Wontumi—a slight that has long simmered. With Boakye now seemingly siding with the NDC, Wontumi’s political dominance in the Ashanti Region is increasingly under threat.

Wontumi’s public outburst and call for action against Boakye have heightened concerns about escalating political tensions. As the December 2024 elections approach, the power struggle between these two influential figures has reached a critical juncture, with Wontumi’s hold on the Ashanti Region looking increasingly precarious. The political landscape in Ashanti is charged with tension, and this intense rivalry promises to shape the electoral battle in the months to come.
