The Member of Parliament for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Alfred Obeng Boateng, has officially announced his intention to run for re-election in 2024. His declaration came as a response to inquiries from some New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai.
In a widely circulated audio clip obtained by The Hawk News, the legislator unequivocally confirmed his plan to participate in the upcoming NPP primaries in 2024. He emphasized his preparedness for the contest and assured that he has set aside ample financial resources for the forthcoming primaries.
Obeng Boateng asserted, “I have made comprehensive preparations because I am aware that many individuals intend to challenge me. I am well-acquainted with the financial capacities of all the candidates in the district, and I am confident that I can outperform them, even if they attempt to form alliances to unseat me.”
Comparing himself to other NPP parliamentary candidates in the constituency, he expressed his readiness to provide more substantial financial support to the delegates. While he paid GHC3,000 to each of the 1,200 delegates in the previous year’s parliamentary primaries, he intends to offer compensation in USD for the upcoming primaries.
“I have already secured the funding for the primaries, and it is in dollars. Delegates can rest assured that I will exceed any amount of money that other aspirants may offer. I will pay twice the amount that any of them may attempt to pay. I have intentionally set aside a substantial sum in dollars for this purpose to prevent depreciation,” affirmed the incumbent MP.
This viral audio clip has raised concerns about the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system, particularly in relation to issues of vote selling and vote buying. It has led political observers to question the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing such matters.
