Wa West MP and retired police officer Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu has praised the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for his “professional and inspirational” stewardship of the recent protests over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Essabah Torkornoo Sackey.

Hon. Toobu, a former UN security advisor during the Darfur peace process, commended the police’s handling of the demonstration in a Facebook post shared shortly after the protesters peacefully dispersed.

“IGP/Mr. Yohuno, your professionalism in securing demonstrations is so inspirational. I’m told the demonstrators have all gone home. I predicted the same,” the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior wrote.

The protest, led by opposition New Patriotic Party members, was held in response to the Chief Justice’s suspension under Article 146 of the Constitution. Despite the political tensions surrounding the issue, the protest concluded without incident — a result that has drawn commendation from multiple quarters.

Observers credit both the police and protest organisers for the calm and orderliness of the event. But Hon. Toobu’s endorsement is particularly noteworthy, given his law enforcement and peacekeeping background.

Having consistently advocated for constitutional policing and democratic accountability, the Wa West legislator’s remarks appear to reflect a wider sentiment about the Police Service’s growing institutional maturity.

Civil society organisations and legal experts have also welcomed the peaceful outcome, describing it as a sign of Ghana’s democratic resilience. The handling of the protest, they say, demonstrates how state institutions can uphold the right to assembly while maintaining public order — a delicate balance often lost in politically charged environments.

As Ghana continues to navigate a complex political landscape, moments of institutional composure such as this are likely to bolster public confidence in democratic processes and the rule of law.
