Former Trade Minister and now Movement for Change (MfC) presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen didn’t hold back during his turn on GBC’s Presidential Encounters. He delivered a sharp critique of his former party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Once a key figure in the NPP, Kyerematen now describes it as a “declining party.”
Responding to why he ditched the NPP to launch the MfC, Kyerematen gave a sharp historical reflection, stating, “I’ve been in the thick of things in the NPP since 1992. But it was time.” He hinted at internal frustrations, saying, “Some felt I had stayed too long in the party, even after giving others the chance to lead.”
With a dismissive wave, Kyerematen declared, “Forget about the NPP. It’s a declining party,” before confidently pivoting to his vision for Ghana’s future.
‘The Great Transformational Plan’
The former Trade and Industry Minister, who served under the NPP government from 2017 to 2023, is now championing his party’s flagship initiative: The Great Transformational Plan. Kyerematen described it as a bold strategy aimed at establishing an Enterprise Economy, promising Ghanaians “Jobs for the People and Cash for the People.”
Kyerematen’s MfC has positioned itself as the beacon of change, offering a fresh alternative to the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The plan emphasizes economic empowerment, job creation, and innovative solutions to Ghana’s persistent challenges.
Kyerematen’s Parting Shots at the NPP
Kyerematen’s candid remarks have stirred political waters, especially among loyalists of the NPP, a party he once fought fiercely to elevate. His defection to form the MfC is seen as a stinging indictment of the NPP’s current state, with Kyerematen painting a picture of a party in decline, weighed down by internal strife and faltering leadership.
Critics within the NPP have accused him of abandoning ship, but Kyerematen remains unbothered. “The NPP had its time. Now, it’s time for something new,” he said confidently.
As election fever grips the nation, Kyerematen’s bold rhetoric and transformational vision are already making waves. Whether Ghanaians will rally behind his Movement for Change or remain tethered to the traditional giants of NPP and NDC remains to be seen.
With The Great Transformational Plan as his war cry, Alan Kyerematen is marching into the presidential race with guns blazing, determined to rewrite Ghana’s political playbook.
