The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has pledged a thorough investigation and swift arrest of those responsible for two fatal shootings in Asawase, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, which have reignited concerns over public safety and security.

Leading a high-level police delegation on a fact-finding mission to the area on Saturday, July 26, the IGP visited both crime scenes and met with local leaders and investigators following the twin incidents that have left the community shaken.

The most recent shooting, which occurred on Friday, July 25, claimed the life of 60-year-old Mohammed Madi Suleman. According to eyewitnesses, Suleman was returning to his vehicle after visiting a local eatery when he was shot by unidentified assailants riding a motorbike. He died instantly.

This followed the killing of Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region, who was also shot under similar circumstances earlier in the week, sparking fears of a possible pattern of targeted attacks.

“These acts of violence will not go unanswered,” Yohuno assured residents during his visit. “I have directed my officers to leave no stone unturned in identifying, arresting, and prosecuting those behind these heinous crimes.”

Director-General of Operations, DCOP Vance Gariba, who accompanied the IGP, reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to restoring calm and ensuring accountability. He reiterated the enforcement of the Ashanti Regional Security Council’s directive imposing a 7:00 p.m. curfew on motorbike movement in designated areas, including Asawase.

“We understand the pain and grief of the community. Justice will be pursued with urgency, and we will maintain a visible and proactive presence to deter any further violence,” DCOP Gariba said.

Relatives of the late Suleman expressed shock and sorrow over the loss, describing him as a peaceful and well-known figure in the area. His body has since been transported to Accra for burial, in line with Islamic rites.

The Ghana Police Service is appealing to the public to assist with credible information that could aid investigations, as they intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and allay public fears.
