Thomas Kusi Boafo, once a lecturer at Kumasi Technical University and now the Chief Executive Officer for Public Sector Reforms, has issued a rallying call to former President John Agyekum Kufuor. He’s urging Kufuor to dive into the internal conflicts of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and bring the party together before the 2024 elections.
In a tell-all on Wontumi TV, Kusi Boafo highlighted the urgent need for Kufuor’s legendary touch to win back those who’ve drifted away or are sitting on the fence. He’s convinced that Kufuor’s magic is key to fortifying the party’s unity and running a strong campaign.
“Bawumia’s trying, but we need Kufuor’s magic. Kufuor needs to step in now. It’s been on my mind for ages,” Kusi Boafo declared. He called for the ex-president to discreetly reach out, using his clout to mend fences within the party.
Pundits are buzzing about Kusi Boafo’s timing and why Wontumi TV was his megaphone to reach Kufuor. Many of those considered disgruntled are Kufuor or Alan Kyeremanten loyalists, who got sidelined, especially during the 2020 elections when some saw the ousting of these ‘Rebels’ from Parliament as a victory.
Kufuor’s past warnings, like his 2015 advice against suspending party officers and his caution about the deceptive nature of political power, were ignored. He had stressed the dangers of complacency and losing touch with the grassroots.
“Power can trick you. If you are not careful, you become complacent, conceited, and discriminatory. If you don’t look critically at the grassroots, you’re in trouble,” Kufuor warned back then.
Kusi Boafo hopes that with Kufuor stepping in, the party can mend rifts and face the 2024 elections united and strong. His plea is a reminder of the crucial need for unity and strategy within the NPP as they gear up for the big race.
