The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has flat-out rejected Vice President and NPP flagbearer Bawumia’s invite for a one-on-one debate on the economy.
“I’m looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy and governance, but he is running away. His people say he doesn’t want to debate because he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies,” Bawumia taunted.
But NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, wasn’t having any of it. He fired back, saying no sensible person debates a liar to avoid getting dragged into the mud.
“The NDC that I’m National Chairman of has said that President Mahama should not engage Bawumia in any debate. There are two categories of people that any sensible person should not debate: a fool or an idiot. Never argue with a fool because people would never know the difference. I hope it does not apply to His Excellency the Vice President because I don’t know him to be a fool,” Nketia shot back.
He didn’t stop there. “Number 2, never argue with a liar; you can’t win because they believe in their lies. It’s like wrestling with a pig in the mud; you both get dirty.”
The Minority Caucus has even listed their MPs ready to take on Bawumia if he’s so keen on a debate.
John Dramani Mahama had his own dig at Bawumia, advising him to first get certified as a licensed driver before thinking about any debate.
“We have solutions for the problems and the experience to implement them. Where Ghana has reached, we need a steady, experienced hand to turn our fortunes around. If you have two buses and one has a driver’s mate who’s still an apprentice, and the other has an experienced driver who’s taken you to your destination and back several times, which bus would you choose?”
He continued, “So the person himself says he’s a driver’s mate. He doesn’t have a license yet. So he should work and get a license first, and then after he gets a license, he can come and we’ll talk.”
