As Ghana marks 68 years of independence, President John Dramani Mahama has called for deep reflection on the nation’s legacy, urging citizens to prioritise sustainable governance and prudent stewardship of national resources.

Speaking at the Independence Day celebration at the Jubilee House, Mahama emphasised that such milestones should not merely be moments of celebration but opportunities to assess Ghana’s progress and identify areas requiring urgent attention.

“Rather than perpetually decrying our failures, every anniversary of our independence must present an opportunity for us to account for the legacy we are building for the next generation,” he said.

The President underscored that Ghanaians are temporary custodians of the country’s assets and must ensure they are managed wisely to benefit future generations. He warned against a legacy of neglect, cautioning that history would not be kind to leaders and policymakers who squander opportunities for progress.

“Our story cannot be one of missed opportunities. It must be one of continuous efforts far more than we can boast of now. Posterity will not accept our failures or take them kindly,” Mahama stressed.

His remarks come at a time when Ghana grapples with economic constraints and growing concerns over governance and accountability. The President’s address serves as a stark reminder that the nation’s trajectory depends on responsible leadership and a collective commitment to long-term prosperity.
