John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the NDC

Former President John Dramani Mahama has launched a blistering attack on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of engaging in vote-buying schemes as the 2024 general elections approach. Speaking during a campaign stop in Bodi, Mahama claimed the NPP is distributing a range of items—including rice, money, seasoning cubes, and even enema bulb syringes locally known as “bentua”—to influence voters.

“They bribe you with 500 cedis, 1000 cedis, or gifts like coalpots, Maggi, and rice,” Mahama charged. “And if you’re unlucky, you get ‘bentua!’” The NDC flagbearer insisted that he witnessed this scheme the previous evening. “I even asked around, and it’s true—the NPP is handing out bentua in exchange for votes,” he declared.

Mahama urged voters to accept the gifts, which he claimed were funded by taxpayer money, but to vote according to their conscience. “As humans, we need to prioritize our basic needs. If we’re hungry, how can we properly use a ‘bentua’?” he sharply criticized the ruling party’s tactics.

The former president also accused the NPP of hoarding large sums of public money, which he alleges is being used to fund vote-buying efforts. “They’ve hoarded our money to take care of their families and friends. When election time comes, they dish out small portions to buy our votes,” Mahama added.

In a passionate appeal to voters, Mahama urged them to resist these manipulative tactics: “Don’t let them buy your vote. As children of God, our worth is priceless. Anything they offer was bought with our own money. So, take back what’s rightfully yours.”

Mahama’s allegations have sparked outrage as the election approaches, casting a dark cloud over the NPP’s integrity and intensifying the political battle.
