Dr-Frank-Amoakohene-Unveils-Ambitious-Plans-for-Ashanti-Region

The newly appointed Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has wasted no time in airing his frustration over the state of affairs left behind by his predecessor and uncle, Simon Osei Mensah, after eight years under the Akufo-Addo government.

Speaking on the state of governance and infrastructure in the region, Amoakohene did not mince words as he painted a grim picture of financial woes and neglect.

Drawing a parallel with Ashanti’s matrilineal inheritance, he remarked, “Uncles are expected to leave a legacy for their nephews. Sadly, mine left me with debt and a dilapidated residence.

Amoakohene’s comments come amid public outcry over the state of the plush Presidential Villa in Kumasi, a government residence meant for regional ministers but now overrun by reptiles. Days before his appointment, viral videos showed snakes and other creatures slithering through the abandoned mansion, highlighting years of neglect under Osei Mensah’s tenure.

Beyond the crumbling villa, the financial situation of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has also raised eyebrows. Insiders reveal significant debts, with contractors unpaid and key projects stalled, further complicating Amoakohene’s task of steering the region forward.

Simon Osei Mensah, who served as Ashanti Regional Minister throughout Nana Akufo-Addo’s eight-year rule, has been widely criticised for his handling of regional affairs, with many accusing him of failing to deliver on infrastructure promises and mismanaging funds.

Now, his nephew-turned-successor is left to pick up the pieces, and he’s not hiding his disappointment.

Political analysts see Amoakohene’s remarks as a subtle dig at the former administration, signalling that the new minister may distance himself from the failures of the past eight years as he attempts to restore credibility to the region’s leadership.

For many Ashantis, the big question remains: Will Amoakohene clean up the mess, or will he be forced to sweep it under the rug like his uncle did?
