Dr Yaw Mathew Opoku-Premeh

Dr. Yaw Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, made a bold statement during his recent outdooring ceremony, openly favoring President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government over that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Addressing a fervent crowd at the Jubilee Park in the Ashanti Region’s capital, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as NAPO, lauded Nana Addo’s eight-year tenure as the pinnacle of Ghanaian leadership since independence in 1957.

NAPO’s remarks were delivered to an audience of enthusiastic party supporters who had traveled from various parts of the country to witness the event. He did not mince words, declaring that no other administration in Ghana’s history could rival the accomplishments of President Akufo-Addo. “For me, Nana Addo is the beginning and end of projects and development,” NAPO asserted, emphasizing his belief in the President’s unparalleled legacy.

In a surprising move, NAPO even placed Nana Addo’s achievements above those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, often revered as the father of the nation. “Not even their Dr. Kwame Nkrumah would match up to Akufo-Addo’s achievement,” he said, proceeding to enumerate various sectors where he believed the current administration had excelled.

The choice of the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP, for this declaration was strategic. The region’s support is crucial for the party, and NAPO’s outdooring was designed to galvanize this base ahead of the upcoming elections. His endorsement of Akufo-Addo’s administration over Kufuor’s, despite Kufuor’s respected status within the party, is seen as a significant shift in internal party dynamics.

As NAPO praised the current government’s initiatives, he highlighted achievements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic reforms, painting a picture of a transformative era under Nana Addo’s leadership. This stance sets the stage for a robust campaign, positioning the current government as the benchmark for future administrations.
The event, marked by vibrant displays of party colors and spirited chants, underscored the NPP’s unity and determination. NAPO’s words, though potentially controversial, were met with loud approval from the attendees, reflecting a deep-seated loyalty to the current leadership.

As the political landscape heats up, NAPO’s endorsement is expected to resonate within the NPP and beyond, influencing voter sentiment. Whether his bold claims will sway the electorate remains to be seen, but his unequivocal support for President Akufo-Addo has undoubtedly set the tone for the party’s campaign.
