A Nigerian university student, Subair Enitan, finds herself hospitalised after a daring 58-hour wash-a-thon in a bid to break the Guinness World Record. The 200-level student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) initiated the extraordinary endeavour of continuously washing clothes for over 50 hours on Friday, November 24, 2023.
In a viral video circulating online, Enitan is seen lying on a hospital bed, both hands whitened and bruised from the prolonged exposure to water. The Student Union President of Obafemi Awolowo University confirmed, “She concluded the wash-a-thon in the early hours of Monday, and we took her to the university clinic.”
Enitan expressed her sense of fulfilment despite the challenges faced during the wash-a-thon, stating, “I am very fulfilled to have completed the task right in front of my mom, friends, and colleagues who thronged this venue to show love and support my ambition,” before being rushed to a medical facility.
The determined student completed the hand-washing marathon on Monday, November 27, at 12:05 am, surpassing the initially set goal of 50 hours. She shared, “I felt I should give up several times, especially when I was pressed. I was like, can I go through this thing? That my mum and my friends are in this crowd; I feel very fulfilled to complete this task right in front of her.”
In a show of solidarity, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, led by the deputy vice chancellor administration, Prof. Abayomi Daramola, paid Enitan a visit on Sunday, November 26.
This feat comes shortly after Nigerian wigmaker Helen Williams secured her place in the Guinness Book of World Records for crafting the world’s longest handmade wig. Williams achieved the milestone by creating a wig measuring an impressive 351.28 metres (1,152 ft 5 in) in Abule Egba, Nigeria, on July 7, 2023.
The growing trend of Nigerians striving for Guinness World Records reflects their enthusiasm to achieve notable feats, particularly following Hilda Baci’s recent triumph.
This, however, is not the first time a Nigerian is hospitalised as they attempt to set or break a new record. Some months ago, another lady collapsed and was taken to hospital while attempting a 72-hour massage marathon.
