OpenAI has developed a tool that can detect watermarks in AI-generated text with a remarkable 99.9% accuracy. Despite the tool being technically ready for over a year, OpenAI has yet to release it. Why the delay?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is widely known for its capabilities to write, rewrite, and paraphrase text, making it both a valuable resource and a point of contention, especially in educational settings. The debate over AI-assisted cheating among students has been intense since ChatGPT’s launch. The revelation that OpenAI has a method to detect its AI-generated content offers a potential solution to concerns about academic integrity.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the reason for the delay in the tool’s release may be linked to user retention. An internal survey showed that nearly a third of ChatGPT users might be discouraged by the implementation of anti-cheating technology. Additionally, the Center for Democracy and Technology found that 59% of middle- and high-school teachers suspect some students are using AI for academic work, up 17 percentage points from the previous year.
An OpenAI spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the decision to withhold the tool stems from its complexity and potential risks. The impact of its launch could extend beyond OpenAI, affecting the broader tech ecosystem.
The anti-cheating tool works by modifying how ChatGPT selects words and phrases, embedding a subtle watermark into the generated text. This watermark, although invisible to humans, is detectable by OpenAI’s technology, which assigns a probability score indicating the likelihood that a text was created by the AI model.
Despite the tool’s high effectiveness, concerns persist. Watermarks could potentially be removed through techniques such as translating the text into another language and back, or by manipulating text with emojis. Additionally, there are issues regarding who should have access to this tool. Too few users could limit its effectiveness, while too many might risk exposing the watermarking technique to misuse.
