Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a key member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential campaign team has issued a fervent call for unity within the party. Speaking on Peace FM’s popular ‘Kokrokoo’ show with Kwami Sefa Kayi, Agyepong urged all NPP members to rally behind the party’s flagbearer for the December 7 elections, despite recent internal divisions.

Addressing the fallout from the NPP’s recent presidential and parliamentary primaries, Agyepong discouraged aspirants who lost their races from going independent. He labeled such moves as “detrimental” and “unnecessary,” urging disgruntled members to prioritize the party’s interests over personal grievances.

“Going independent doesn’t help. It’s unnecessary,” Agyepong stressed, advocating for loyalty and unity as the party gears up for a pivotal election. He acknowledged the challenges the NPP faced but expressed optimism that the party’s internal rifts are beginning to heal.

Despite his unsuccessful bid for the NPP flagbearership, Agyepong reaffirmed his commitment to the party and Ghana’s political landscape. He pledged to continue advocating for integrity and transparency in politics, emphasizing the need for propriety in public service.

His call for unity is crucial as the NPP, which has governed Ghana since 2017, prepares to face strong opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Dramani Mahama. With less than a year until the elections, maintaining a united front will be essential for mobilizing support and delivering a coherent message to voters.

In related news, former Trades Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has left the NPP to form a new group, the Movement for Change, in his bid for the presidency. Additionally, several candidates are running as independents in the 2024 parliamentary race. Notable independents include former Gender Minister Cynthia Mamle Morrison, former Deputy Minister Odotei Sowah, ex-MP and Chief Executive of Ghana Expo Promotions Gifty Klenam, and Kwame Asare Obeng (APlus). The Fomena, Ejisu, Suhum, Asante Akyem North, Asante Akyem Central, Sunyani East, and Nkoranza North constituencies are all being contested by candidates with strong ties to the NPP.

As Agyepong’s appeal resonates within the party, the coming months will be critical in determining whether the NPP can mend its internal divisions and support Dr. Bawumia as it seeks to secure another term in office.
