The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) has been hit by a shocking scandal, with its Head of Finance, Alhaji Abdul-Mumin Yakubu, accused of pocketing over GHS300,000 by illegally converting four years of accumulated leave into cash. The explosive revelation was made by Boutrous Andy, Deputy Communications Director of the NDC Youth Wing, who slammed the move as a blatant abuse of power and a violation of Ghana’s Labour Act.

According to Andy, Mr. Yakubu brazenly ignored Section 31 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which mandates that leave must be taken and cannot be monetized unless the employment is terminated. TDC’s internal directive requiring all employees to utilize their outstanding leave days was also flouted in what critics are calling a “shameless grab for personal gain.”

“This is theft in broad daylight,” Andy declared. “How can the same man who is supposed to uphold the rules turn around and exploit them for his selfish interests?”

The scandal is made worse by Mr Yakubu’s double standards. Andy revealed that the same Finance Director denied a similar request from Mr Alexander Abrah, a former Management Accountant at TDC. Abrah had sought to cash out his leave before retirement, but Mr Yakubu blocked the move and escalated it to the Labour Commission. “Now he’s cashing out over GHS300,000 for himself? The hypocrisy is nauseating!” Andy fumed.

The NDC firebrand didn’t mince words, calling for immediate action:

1. Refund the Loot: Mr Yakubu must repay the GHS300,000 immediately.

2. Enforce Leave Rules: The TDC transition team should ensure that Yakubu uses his accumulated leave instead of pocketing more cash.

3. Expose the Rot: A forensic audit of the Finance and Administration department must be conducted to uncover other dirty deals.

4. Punish the Perpetrator: Disciplinary action should be taken to set an example for public sector accountability.

Labour law experts have backed Andy’s demands, with Dr Afua Boakye, a leading consultant, describing the allegations as “a serious breach of both ethical and legal standards.”

Meanwhile, outrage is boiling over among workers and stakeholders, with many questioning how such a brazen act could happen under the nose of TDC’s management.

“Yakubu’s actions are an insult to the hardworking employees who play by the rules,” Andy added. “He must be held accountable, and justice must be served.”

As the scandal unfolds, pressure is mounting on TDC to clean their house and ensure this outrageous abuse of power doesn’t go unpunished. The public is watching, and the demand for accountability is louder than ever.
