The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) is reeling from a bombshell revelation, with its Head of Finance, Alhaji Abdul-Mumin Yakubu, accused of raking in over GHS300,000 by unlawfully converting four years of unutilized leave into cash. Boutrous Andy, Deputy Communications Director of the NDC Youth Wing, has exposed this alleged financial impropriety, branding it as a brazen abuse of power and a flagrant violation of Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
According to Andy, Mr. Yakubu sidestepped Section 31 of the Labour Act, which mandates that annual leave must be taken and cannot be monetized except upon termination of employment. This violation was compounded by Mr. Yakubu’s disregard for TDC’s internal policy requiring all employees to utilize their outstanding leave days.
“This is daylight robbery,” Andy charged. “The same man entrusted with enforcing the rules has bent them for personal gain. How can this go unchallenged?”
The scandal has sparked outrage, particularly due to Yakubu’s glaring double standards. Andy revealed that Mr. Yakubu denied a similar request from Mr. Alexander Abrah, a former Management Accountant at TDC, who sought to cash out his leave before retirement. Instead, Yakubu escalated Abrah’s case to the Labour Commission, denying him the benefit he has now enjoyed himself.
“Yakubu’s hypocrisy stinks to the heavens,” Andy fumed. “He had the audacity to block a colleague but conveniently pockets over GHS300,000 for himself? This is corruption at its peak!”
Andy has issued a four-point demand for swift action:
Refund the Money: Yakubu must immediately repay the GHS300,000 to TDC’s coffers.
Enforce Leave Policies: The TDC transition team should ensure Yakubu takes his accumulated leave as per policy.
Conduct a Forensic Audit: A thorough investigation of TDC’s Finance and Administration department is essential to uncover other possible financial irregularities.
Disciplinary Action: Yakubu must face sanctions to set an example and restore public trust.
Labour law experts have lent their voices to the uproar, with Dr. Afua Boakye describing the alleged payout as “a gross breach of legal and ethical obligations.”
Workers at TDC are also up in arms, expressing frustration over the perceived abuse of power. “How can the same management that preaches compliance turn a blind eye to such blatant wrongdoing?” one employee lamented.
Boutrous Andy insists the matter should not be swept under the carpet. “Yakubu’s actions are an affront to hardworking employees and a slap in the face of ethical governance. The public is watching, and justice must prevail.”
As the scandal deepens, pressure is mounting on TDC’s leadership to take decisive action and restore credibility. Stakeholders are demanding transparency and accountability in what has become one of the most controversial episodes in TDC’s recent history.
