A tragic accident has claimed the life of a ferry technician in Dambai, who drowned while trying to repair a malfunctioning ferry on the Oti River.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 1, when the ferry, carrying both goods and passengers, became stranded due to an engine failure. According to Charles Awuranyi, the Assembly Member for Dambai Central, the technician and a colleague ventured into the river to address the problem.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the technician tragically drowned while attempting the repairs underwater. His body was later recovered and taken to Worawora Hospital for preservation.

Awuranyi, speaking to Channel One News, expressed frustration over the recurring issues with the ferry and called for immediate and permanent solutions. “This incident highlights the urgent need for proper maintenance and repair of the ferry,” Awuranyi said. “If the ferry had been properly fixed, this tragedy could have been avoided. We urge authorities to ensure the ferry is put into a reliable condition to prevent future accidents.”

The community remains deeply affected by the loss, underscoring the pressing need for improved safety measures and maintenance protocols for the vital transportation link.
