OGYEAHOHO YAW GYEBI II is the president of the National House of Chiefs.

In a striking departure from the long-held tradition of political neutrality, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have increasingly drawn traditional chiefs into their political orbit. This development has raised concerns about the integrity and impartiality of the chieftaincy institution, which has historically been expected to remain above the fray of partisan politics.

n the Ashanti Region, the NPP has managed to secure the endorsement of Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ababio, the revered occupant of the golden stool. Otumfuo has publicly praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, labeling him a potential “fine president” for Ghana. This endorsement was underscored by Otumfuo’s personal connection to Dr. Bawumia and his family. “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a son and grandchild. I fathered him together with his father. I paid his fees. So, having selected him, we shall pray to our ancestors for you even though chiefs are not supposed to engage in politics,” Otumfuo declared during Dr. Prempeh’s nomination introduction.

On the other side, the NDC has garnered tacit support from the Central Regional House of Chiefs. The NDC’s consistent choice of a running mate from this region has not gone unnoticed, and local traditional authorities have expressed their appreciation. The President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs recently blessed the NDC with prayers, acknowledging the party’s attention to the region’s needs during their leadership selections.

These instances illustrate a growing trend of political parties leveraging traditional authority for endorsements and support. While such endorsements might provide immediate political benefits, they raise significant concerns about the potential long-term implications for the neutrality and integrity of the chieftaincy institution.

At The Hawk, we believe it is essential to maintain the chieftaincy institution’s neutrality to safeguard its integrity and public trust. However, with both major parties actively courting traditional leaders, the role of chieftaincy is poised to be a key issue in the upcoming elections.
