The Commuters Care Association (CCA) has strongly condemned the decision by the Alliance of Drivers Ghana to implement a 20% increase in transport fares without consulting key stakeholders.
The fare adjustment, which took effect on March 17, 2025, has sparked outrage among commuters, with many questioning the justification for such a steep hike.
While the Alliance of Drivers Ghana attributes the increase to rising fuel prices, engine oil costs, and vehicle spare parts, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has refuted these claims, stating that there have been no recent increases in spare parts prices, import duties, or market conditions to warrant such an adjustment.
In a statement, CCA President Eunice Odai urged transport operators to engage in transparent and inclusive dialogue before imposing fare hikes that disproportionately affect ordinary Ghanaians.
“We call on all transport operators to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders before making unilateral decisions that impose undue financial hardship on commuters,” the statement read.
The CCA also encouraged commuters to report any unauthorized fare increases to the appropriate regulatory bodies, emphasizing that unchecked fare hikes could lead to exploitative pricing and further economic strain on the public.
As the cost of living continues to rise, the association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for fair and efficient transport services and ensuring that commuters are not unfairly burdened by arbitrary fare adjustments.
