The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indefinitely expelled former Gender Minister Cynthia Morrison and 280 other party members for what the leadership has described as acts of betrayal and gross misconduct during the just-ended 2024 general elections.

The announcement, made through a “Forfeiture of Membership Notice” issued by the party’s General Secretary and endorsed by the Constituency Chairman for Agona West, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, detailed the decision to terminate their membership, effective December 16, 2024.

The expulsion was carried out under Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP Constitution (2017, as amended), following allegations that include:

• Contesting as independent candidates against official NPP nominees.

• Publicly endorsing candidates from rival parties.

• Actively supporting independent candidates during the December 7 parliamentary elections in Agona West.

• Demonstrating repeated disloyalty to the party’s cause in previous election years.

Cynthia Morrison, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and a former minister under the NPP administration, faced accusations of standing as an independent candidate in her constituency, allegedly sabotaging the party’s electoral performance.

As part of the sweeping sanctions, the expelled members are prohibited from:

• Representing themselves as NPP members.

• Holding any official roles within the party.

• Participating in NPP meetings or activities.

• Using the party’s symbols or flags for any purpose.

The decision was unanimously backed during an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting on December 15, which included various party leaders, municipal executives, and elders.

Speaking on behalf of the leadership, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko defended the move as vital for preserving the party’s integrity. “This was a painful but necessary decision to protect the unity of the NPP. Loyalty is the cornerstone of our party, and anyone undermining that must face the consequences,” he stated.

The announcement has drawn mixed responses from party members and political observers. While some have praised the party’s leadership for its resolve, others, especially supporters of Cynthia Morrison, have decried the move as overly harsh.

“Cynthia Morrison has sacrificed so much for the NPP, and this is the thanks she gets? It’s disgraceful,” one supporter lamented.

The expulsions raise questions about the potential long-term effects on the NPP’s cohesion and electoral prospects. Political analysts caution that the party risks alienating key supporters if internal divisions are not addressed swiftly.

As the expelled members consider their next steps, some speculate they may gravitate towards independent movements or rival political parties, further complicating the NPP’s efforts to consolidate power in future elections.

For now, the party’s leadership is urging unity among its remaining members and focusing on rebuilding the NPP ahead of Ghana’s next electoral cycle.
