The Women’s Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in South Africa, in collaboration with the Fred Agbenyo Development Fund (FADF), has extended a helping hand to students in the Guan Constituency of the Oti Region by donating essential sanitary pads to support menstrual hygiene.

The Lipke Secondary School and Akpafu Secondary Technical School were the proud recipients of this philanthropic initiative, aimed at empowering young girls through menstrual health and hygiene.

At a presentation ceremony held on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Lipke Secondary School, Madam Wilbertina Buxton, SA NDC Women’s Wing Organizer, expressed that this marks the second phase of the donation exercise, which commenced in August last year. Under the theme “Empowering Girls Through Menstrual Hygiene: Sanitary Pads Phase 2,” the initiative seeks to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls across Ghana.

“This year, we intend to run the project in all regions of Ghana before the elections, starting with the Oti Region, specifically the Guan Constituency,” Madam Buxton announced. She emphasized the need for a tax-free sanitary pad policy or free distribution to address the challenges faced by young women during menstruation.

Madam Buxton highlighted the importance of menstrual hygiene and the struggles faced by women and girls due to inadequate access to sanitary products. She stressed the urgency for action from government and policymakers to ensure that girls have access to proper menstrual hygiene resources without hindrance.

The initiative also aligns with the NDC’s vision for a 24-hour economy, ensuring that women have access to sanitary products at any time of the day. Madam Buxton disclosed plans to extend the donation drive to other regions, with upcoming visits to the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions.

Accompanied by Hon Fred Agbenyo, PC for Guan Constituency, regional executives, and other party officials, Madam Buxton reiterated the NDC Women’s Wing’s commitment to advocating for women’s rights and addressing issues affecting their well-being.
