As the dust settles on the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections, Nana Akomea, the Managing Director of STC and a key player in Bawumia’s campaign, has let the cat out of the bag with a bombshell admission. Despite all the raucous chants of “It’s possible” and the rampant optimism, Akomea admits they all knew deep down that defeat was inevitable. It was all just smoke and mirrors, folks!

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Akomea dropped a bombshell revelation: as early as February 2024, internal research showed John Dramani Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) had a solid 10-point lead. While the gap narrowed as the elections approached, the outcome was not a surprise to the ruling NPP—only the scale of the defeat was.

“We knew the NDC was ahead early on, and we saw it shrinking in October. But to see a staggering 2 million supporters stay away? That’s massive, and we need to understand why,” Akomea admitted.

Despite the glimmer of hope in October when the gap shrank to just 2 percentage points, Akomea acknowledged that the NPP’s internal polls were clear: Mahama’s victory was all but sealed. The result—Mahama winning with 56.55%—was a crushing blow for the NPP, which also saw several prominent figures, including KT Hammond and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, lose their parliamentary seats.

The NPP’s apparent underestimation of voter apathy and disgruntlement among their supporters could be the smoking gun in their defeat. With 2 million voters staying at home, questions are now being asked—what exactly went wrong for the ruling party?
