The Ghana Police Service has invited Oheneba Nana Asiedu, host of Kumasi-based Wontumi TV/Radio, for questioning after being accused of peddling fake news about the Electoral Commission (EC).

The move comes in response to a petition by Eric Adjei, the Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono Region. Adjei claims Oheneba violated Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and Section 76 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), by spreading false information that could mislead voters.

Oheneba announced on live TV and radio that the EC had planned a two-day election, with voting for the first seven candidates on December 7, 2024, and no clarity on when the remaining candidates would be voted for. Adjei argues this “reckless and malicious” statement contradicts the EC’s official information and was a deliberate attempt to confuse the public.

“This kind of misinformation is dangerous and must be dealt with. The Police must act swiftly to investigate, arrest, and prosecute him to protect the integrity of the electoral process,” Adjei stated.

The Police have since invited Oheneba to the Ashanti Regional Command to assist with investigations into the claims.
