Oheneba Nana Asiedu, the outspoken Kumasi-based radio and TV presenter, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for spreading false election news.
The presenter, known for his fiery on-air presence, was taken into custody on 23rd November 2024 and charged under Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) for the publication of false news. He now faces the prospect of appearing in court, where he will defend his controversial claims, a release by the Police said.
The arrest follows a petition from Eric Adjei, the NDC’s Deputy Communications Officer for the Bono Region, who accused Oheneba of deliberately misleading voters. On live TV and radio, Asiedu falsely claimed that the Electoral Commission (EC) had scheduled a two-day election, with voting for the first seven candidates set for December 7, 2024, and no clear date for the rest of the candidates.
Adjei slammed the broadcaster’s actions as “reckless” and “malicious,” arguing that Oheneba’s statement directly contradicted official EC information and was designed to confuse the public ahead of the crucial polls.
As the drama unfolds, Oheneba’s fate now rests in the hands of the courts, with many wondering whether this arrest will set a precedent for responsible media coverage in Ghana’s political landscape. Will the case serve as a stern warning for broadcasters, or is this just the opening salvo in a political media war?
Stay tuned for developments.
