District Chief Executive Hon. Everson Addo-Donkor

In a shocking political stalemate, the Techiman North District Assembly has, for the fourth consecutive time, failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM), leaving key administrative duties and developmental projects in limbo. The ongoing deadlock, fueled by a dramatic boycott by Assembly members reportedly aligned with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sparked heated debate over whether this is deliberate sabotage or political strategy.

The latest attempt at resolving the impasse saw all 19 NDC-affiliated Assembly members mysteriously absent from the meeting, effectively stalling proceedings. The gathering was meant to elect a PM, form committees, and discuss the upcoming quarter’s budget, but the glaring empty seats ensured no progress could be made.

Visibly frustrated, District Chief Executive Hon. Everson Addo-Donkor blasted the absent members in an interview with the press. “This is the fourth time we have gathered for this purpose, and each time, our colleagues from the NDC side make it impossible to move forward,” he said. “Their deliberate absence today means we can’t hold elections or conduct any meaningful business.”

Addo-Donkor warned of dire consequences for the district if the stalemate continues, especially given its recent upgrade to Municipal Assembly status under the Akufo-Addo-led administration. “This upgrade is a significant milestone, bringing development opportunities to Techiman North. But without a Presiding Member, we are at a standstill. I call on our colleagues to abandon partisan tactics and put the needs of the people first,” he appealed.

Assembly members who attended the meeting expressed growing frustration with the repeated absences. One member voiced concern about the district’s stagnation: “We came here ready to work, but this boycott is holding the entire district hostage. It’s unacceptable.” Another added, “We represent the people, not party interests. It’s time to act responsibly and prioritize development.”

Critics have accused the NDC-affiliated Assembly members of deliberately undermining progress to score political points, with some branding their actions as selfish and detrimental to the district’s growth. Others speculate that the boycott is a calculated strategy to leverage influence in the Assembly.

Residents of Techiman North are now caught in the crossfire, with crucial projects and policies hanging in the balance. From road improvements to school infrastructure upgrades, the district’s developmental agenda has hit a wall due to the leadership vacuum.

As frustrations mount, the question remains: will the Assembly rise above partisan differences to break the deadlock, or will Techiman North’s progress remain hostage to political gamesmanship? For now, the waiting game continues.
