The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Parker Odarlai, has admitted he is still in a state of shock over the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, December 13, 2024, Odarlai struggled to comprehend the party’s unexpected loss despite strong grassroots support. “I still can’t understand what happened,” he confessed, reflecting on the party’s failed bid despite its efforts.
“I want to congratulate all Ghanaians for a peaceful election. In politics, you don’t always win. But after the level of support we had, especially from the grassroots, this defeat is truly baffling,” he added.
Odarlai also pointed out that the party may have failed to address the warning signs during the campaign. “I warned some of my colleagues about the negative responses we were getting, especially in communities like Abossey Okai. Even Kennedy Agyapong said we lost this election two years ago,” he revealed.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Odarlai praised the tireless efforts of regional executives in Greater Accra, noting their active involvement on the ground. “At one point, I had to tell Jerry Ahmed to take a break, but he insisted on pushing harder, especially as the response on the ground was not encouraging. He didn’t ignore what he saw, and it’s no surprise he secured the Weija-Gbawe seat,” he said.
However, the defeat has triggered internal criticism, with some party figures blaming President Akufo-Addo’s leadership for the party’s poor performance. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, managed only 41.61% of the vote, while President-elect John Dramani Mahama secured a commanding 56.55%.
Odarlai’s remarks reveal deep frustration within the NPP, as the party comes to terms with its unexpected fall from grace.
