Suame MP Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has hit out at John Mahama, branding his plan to abolish the betting tax, denouncing it as a perilous move that could mislead Ghana’s youth.
The NDC flagbearer made the controversial promise during a youth event at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Monday, 12 August 2024.
Mensah-Bonsu, who’s not shy about his strong religious beliefs, didn’t hold back. “Betting is just gambling, plain and simple,” he fumed. “It’s not a job – it’s for those who have nothing better to do.”
The outspoken MP, who shares a church with Mahama, vowed to report him to their head pastor, Pastor Wegam. “We’re both members of the Church of Christ,” he revealed. “I’ll be telling our pastor to have a serious word with him.”
According to Mensah-Bonsu, the betting tax was designed to steer young people away from gambling as a career choice. He’s now worried that Mahama’s proposal could turn betting into a national pastime.
Mahama’s promise to scrap the betting tax has sparked a heated debate, with supporters cheering for the relief it might bring, while critics like Mensah-Bonsu warn it could send the wrong message to the nation’s youth.
