Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has delivered a stark and urgent message to voters in the Ashanti Region, warning that casting a ballot for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would be a grave mistake for the nation’s future. Addressing supporters after a health walk in the Manhyia South Constituency, Dr. Prempeh emphasized the monumental importance of the December 7 elections.
Dr. Prempeh framed the upcoming vote as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political history. “If you choose me as Vice President and Dr. Baffour Awuah as MP for Manhyia South, it will be a decisive victory for the NPP. We could end up ruling indefinitely,” he stated. “Is this not the reality we face?”
He sharply criticized the NDC for its track record in the Ashanti Region, accusing them of neglect and broken promises. Referencing a contentious statement by a former NDC President, Dr. Prempeh claimed the NDC’s promises of infrastructure development were never delivered. He also aimed at the NDC’s management of the National Health Insurance Scheme, alleging their policies caused unnecessary hardship.
“The NDC has consistently let down the Ashanti Region,” Dr. Prempeh asserted. “Voting for them in 2024 amounts to betraying the nation’s interests. They’ve ignored our demands for jobs and essential services, and instead mocked our needs.”
Justin Frimpong Koduah, the NPP’s General Secretary, called on supporters to mobilize, stressing that achieving a voter turnout of 90% and securing over 70% of the votes in the Ashanti Region is critical for the party’s success. He highlighted that such a strong showing would enable the completion of significant regional projects, including the Boankra Inland Port and the Suame Interchange.
Dr. Baffour Awuah, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South, pledged to ensure that Dr. Prempeh’s efforts, particularly his role in the Free SHS programme, would be acknowledged and rewarded.
As the election approaches, Dr. Prempeh’s warnings underscore the high stakes for the NPP in securing the Ashanti Region’s support and maintaining its dominance in Ghanaian politics.
