In a bold and eyebrow-raising statement at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 manifesto launch, Alice Yakubu, a Level 400 IT student from the University of Ghana, claimed that the ruling party has already created an astonishing 21 million jobs. This figure, according to Yakubu, was achieved despite the global twin crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Alice, who was reportedly reading from a WhatsApp message sent to her for the occasion at the G.S.T.S Auditorium in Takoradi, outlined that the public sector alone has generated 1.2 million jobs, while the private sector has seen 975,000 new employment opportunities. She also claimed that over 100,000 graduates have been absorbed into the job market, with an additional 34,000 employed under the Nation Builders Corps (NABCo).
The most startling aspect of her assertion is that this figure represents roughly 63.64% of Ghana’s total population, which is estimated to be around 33 million as of 2024. This comes despite the country grappling with a reported unemployment rate of around 14 percent.
Yakubu’s claims have sparked intense debate, with many questioning the accuracy of her calculations and the feasibility of such massive job creation in the face of significant global economic challenges. As the dust settles from the manifesto launch, these bold figures are likely to be scrutinized and debated as Ghana heads into a crucial election year.
