Former President John Agyekum Kufour

Francis Ejaku Donkoh, former Central Regional Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has offered high praise for the leadership of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, describing it as the most exceptional era in Ghana’s history since its independence.

Speaking on Kastle 90.3FM, a prominent Cape Coast media outlet where he also holds a position, Mr. Donkoh, a former Assemblyman for Nkuben electoral area in Saltpond within the Mfantseman Municipality, lauded the policies and governance structure implemented during Kufuor’s presidency. In comparison to the current administration, he argued that Kufuor’s leadership has left an enduringly positive impact that resonates deeply with the Ghanaian population.

Mr. Donkoh highlighted several pivotal policies introduced during Kufuor’s time, such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Program (LEAP), the creation of the Metro Mass Transport system to provide reliable and affordable public transportation, and the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme, which registered over 11 million people during his tenure. Mr. Donkoh stated that these initiatives were underpinned by forward-thinking leadership and brought tangible benefits to the people of Ghana.

Reflecting on the present state of the nation, Mr. Donkoh suggested that if Ghana had experienced leadership similar to Kufuor’s after his time in office, the country might have achieved even greater progress. Despite acknowledging current economic challenges, he stressed that well-considered policies from subsequent governments could have mitigated some of the difficulties faced today.

“While the current economic landscape may prompt questions, appropriate policies from successive governments could have averted these current challenges,” Mr. Donkoh commented.

With a strong concern for the nation’s welfare, Mr. Donkoh emphasised that Ghana’s resilience persists despite ongoing hardships. He praised the current government’s efforts to alleviate the burdens faced by its citizens, acknowledging the difficulties and expressing empathy for fellow Ghanaians, as he too is affected.

Mr. Donkoh’s sentiments emerged during an exclusive one-on-one interview with Miss Ruby Adams, as part of the commemoration of his birthday on August 22nd.

Amid Ghana’s current challenges, Mr. Donkoh’s perspective on Kufuor’s governance contributes to the ongoing discussion about effective leadership and its lasting impact on the country’s developmental trajectory.
