The open declaration to a flag-bearer hopeful by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives at the national and regional levels are sacrificing the expected unity of party after flag-bearer race, a young political activist, Ayitey Armah lamented.

He further mentioned some constituencies towing the same lane as well as the national executives who are seeking re-election and others who are aspiring for various national positions are also unfortunately making open declarations.

Nii Armah, in an interview with The Hawk Newspaper said the NDC has a history of situations which has badly affected the chances of the party.

Nii Armah stated that some national executives and almost all the regional executives of the party declared and toured their respective regions with former President Mahama in his campaign seeking to lead the NDC again going into 2020 national elections.

With this open declaration, he quizzed whether if that means these current and yet to be national executives, regional executives and the former government appointees cannot work with other flag-bearer hopefuls should any of them wins the upcoming primaries?

So far, the other flag-bearer hopefuls who want to lead NDC are Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabral; Prof. Joshua Alabi; Alban Kingsford Sumanna Bagbin; Kweku Ricketts Haygan; Goosie Tano; Sylvester Mensah; Steven Atubigah and five others.

The young political Activist alleged that “the current NDC Members of Parliament made open declaration for John Dramani Mahama which I think is unfair”.

He posited that the NDC should have learnt from what caused the division prior to the 2000 elections, adding that that problem is still worrying the party till today.

“I was shocked the current crop of leaders of the NDC at the national and regional level have still not seen reason to learn anything of the past predicament which is still hurting the party a lot”, he marveled.

Nii Armah, who is also NDC Branch chairman of CAC Branch A, in Krowor, Nungua re-counted that similar problem in 2012 led to a division which dissolved a vibrant wing of the NDC, the 31st December Women’s Movement which used to attend to the needs of the women in the party.

Adding, he mentioned similar situation led to the breakaway of some party members who formed political parties like Reforms led by Mr. Goosie Tano and Dr. Obed Asamoah of United Freedom Party.

As if that was not enough, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings also went to form National Democrat Party (NDP) in 2012 following similar problem. This division has led to the formation of GAME and FONKA.

Despite all these historical facts in NDC, the Greater Accra Regional (GAR) executives of the opposition NDC joined former President John Dramani Mahama on his campaign tour in Accra to garner votes ahead of the party’s flag-bearership primaries, he opined.

Nii Armah stated that, “it would have been reasonable if these regional executives accord all other party flag-bearer hopefuls who are also going around meeting the party members for their votes. This, he anticipated it would strengthen the NDC after flag-bearership race ahead of the national elections against the incompetent Nana Akufo-Addo led NPP government”
